Things are about to get rocky for Dean Wentworth and Willow Wade.

Willow Wade is used to living in the spotlight, with her father a famous drummer in the band Willow Creek—her namesake—it’s been a lot to live up to and oftentimes she doesn’t feel she’s enough. But there has always been one person she could turn to.

Dean Wentworth knows a thing or two about how crippling a name can be. His family is worth billions after all. But Dean’s always been content to do his own thing. Play his guitar. Work on cars. And geek out to his various “nerdoms”.

But when Willow turns up unexpectedly, he realizes maybe there is more in life he wants.

Her.

One trip will change their lives forever.

This book was closer to 3.5 stars for me. After starting this book, there were lots of references to other characters, so I looked up the author and see that this is a spin-off of a series. This book is about some of the kids of the previous series, so if you like to look back and see how old friends are doing, this would be a great way to do it. I, however, haven't read the first series, so I didn't care.

This is a New Adult romance, and it was slightly different than the books I usually read in that it was more "sweet" than my usual read. I didn't like the heroine, Willow, and I think it's more "It's me, not you" because she was so young and immature and reminded me of the high school students I teach than an adult that is ready for a real relationship.

During summer break from college, Willow wants to go on a road trip across the country to visit her cousin, and no one will go with her. She returns home to spend time with her family and friends, and her friend Dean agrees to go with her. Road trip back on! Dean and Willow use an old-fashioned map instead of GPS and find new experiences and adventures along the way. And sugar. And maybe love.

This book is the first in a new series, and there is build-up to lead to the second book, but this could be a standalone novel.

Writing Style (POV): dual POV
Sexual Content: Some making out/kissing/touching. There was some "closed door" sex.
Level of Violence: None.

Will I Recommend This Book? It was fine. Not great, and if you had read the first series, it would be great to check in on the new and old characters.

The Road That Leads To Us edition by Micalea Smeltzer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love when a great set of best friends find more in each other and I was excited to read Dean & Willow’s journey. I was even more excited because I love the other Willow Creek novels and Ms Smeltzer didn’t disappoint me at all with this novel, too.

Willow is coming home for the summer after her first year of college. She’s disappointed in the life that college offered and even more disappointed in her so called friends who were supposed to take a summer road trip with her. Her first encounter with her parents (Maddox, the drummer of Willow Creek, and Emma) is nothing short of what one would expect after reading the other books. It cracked me up and I knew the book was going to be great from the beginning!

Dean is content with his life as a mechanic in his dad’s auto shop. He’s missed Willow while she’s been away, but also understands her personality better than probably anyone else so he wasn’t surprised that she sort of dropped all communication with everyone.

Dean decides to join Willow on her summer adventure and the fun doesn’t stop. It’s not like they’re without a little drama here and there, but this novel is so much more about their relationship and all the nuances that they already have as best friends and how they shift as their relationship shifts. But even from the beginning of the road trip before they admit they have feelings as anything other than best friends, you can feel Dean’s love for Willow

We weren’t at home, but the sound of her laughter made it feel like we were, because Willow was my happy place.

And then when they admit their feelings, Dean outdoes himself with his words yet again

“You stole my breath and my thoughts and everything seemed to align. I was scared to act on what I felt. I didn’t want to ruin what we have, or make things awkward if you didn’t feel the same. I don’t know what possessed me to kiss you, but I did, and it was the best ******* kiss I’ve ever had and I refuse to take it back. I want you to be mine. My girlfriend. My future. My forever. Whatever you want to call it, you’re it. I know it.”

And the story progressed from there. I don’t want to give much away so I’ll leave it at that, but the other thing I loved about this book was that the original characters were still so true to who they were in the original series. Maddox was definitely still Maddox, the sensitive guy who loves his hedgehogs and knits to calm himself down, but tries to act all tough -- and we all know that he’s totally at Emma’s mercy anyway.

I recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed Ms. Smeltzer’s books in the past or who wants to give them a try. It’s a great love story and you won’t be disappointed!!!
“Sometimes the most important things stare us right in the face, waiting until the perfect moment to be noticed. This is our moment.”

The Road That Leads To Us was such a fun read. I am a sucker for a friends to lover’s romance and this one did not disappoint.

The Road That Leads To Us follows the story of Willow and Dean. Willow is at a crossroads in life and isn’t sure if the path that she’s on, is the right plan for her. So, she decides to go on a road trip. However, when her friends bail on her last minute, she ends up returning home, hoping for some clarity as to what move she should make next. Being back home reminds her of just how much she’s missed it and the people she’s left behind; especially when she runs into Dean. Dean and Willow have been best friends for as long as they can remember. They get and understand each other on such a deep level. Their reunion is just what Willow needed; especially when Dean suggests that the two of them go ahead with Willow’s plans for a road trip. Armed with a map and not much else to go on, these two are about to embark on a trip of a lifetime. What the two of them didn’t know, was that this road trip would change their lives in more ways than one…..

The Road That Leads To Us was such a fun read. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. I LOVED seeing Maddox as a father. He was so over the top and protective of Willow. I couldn’t get enough of it. He was the perfect dad! And I really loved spending some time with Maddox and Emma again. Their lives certainly have changed, but in a good way!

One of the things that I loved about this book was that it was really light on the drama. It was so refreshing to read a book where there wasn’t a ton of drama, pulling the characters apart. It was just a fun and entertaining road trip between two good friends. It really reminded me of what it was like to be at the age Willow was at. She had her whole future ahead of her; so many endless possibilities

I absolutely loved the connection between Willow and Dean. You could tell right away that the feelings they had for one another were real and genuine. They had excellent chemistry and shared a lot of sweet, romantic moments.

The Road That Leads To Us was a fantastic read, from start to finish. The story-line was entertaining and captivating. I loved that it was told from dual points of view. And let’s face it, I wasn’t really ready to say goodbye to the Willow Creek clan, so I was really happy to spend more time with them. Even though this is a stand-alone, it is a wonderful addition to the Willow Creek series. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the US Series!
